Day 2 - Paper Flower hairpins

Today is paper flower day. So I made a pair of hairpins. I will probably wear them to work tomorrow.

As an extra, Dad and I put up a coat hook board. The hooks are not totally straight, but hey, it works. and we made it too. :)

Day one of Thing-a-Day Feburary...

This is something I made last night really fast at about 9:30 after I got home from work. It is not like my usual artwork which is generally more colorful, but I like it, and think it is really more sucessful than the first one, which I spent more time on. It has three hearts cut out from a dictionary page, sewn on a scrap piece of yellow fabric which I frayed the edges of a little bit. I got this box of blank Strathmore cards at Goodwill for a really good price. I have a feeling they are going to be my quick backup plan for this thing a day if I get strapped for time. ;)

I have decided that I am going to do the "Thing-a-Day" thing in Febuary, but I think that I am going to post here instead of on their website. What you do is create something once a day, spending about 1/2 hr. on each thing. So I am going to try it. I will probably go over on the time limit, though. I am pretty slow with things most days. Here is my pre-Feb.-too-excited-to-wait post. I have it all planned out. Mon. is my Poetry day-Limericks and Haiku alternating, Tuesday is my postcard day, Wednesday is my paper flower day, Thursday is my drawing/ painting day, Friday is my jewelry day, and Saturday is my UFO Day (Unfinished object day) so that I can get four at least of my unfinished objects I have lying around the house done, anyway. Sunday is my easy day, where I am going to try and make an easy salad out of one of my four ingredient cookbooks.

So here goes nothing.

I thought I would write a quick post, although I doubt anyone will read it. It is almost Christmas (Is it next week, already?) And I hope that everyone has a safe and blessed holiday. My i-Google page

This is my igoogle page. It was kind of hard to download the screen shot, though. I had to put an extra little program on my computer. There is probably another way to do it, I just couldn't figure it out. I guess it is underlining everything because it has made it part of a link to my i-google screen shot. :) So, I learned out how to download screen shots. I like the Fortune cookie app. and the cat just for fun. It is handy to have everything here on one page to look at, such as the news, and weather.
For the library, - I had looked at the Dublin's library start page, and thought that it would be nice to have a list of useful websites on our libraries start page. I think some patrons would find it useful. All-in-all, a fun assignment!

Applications

We have been using Google calendar and Google Doc's for the Young Adult section for a while now(about a year?). It has really been useful because we are not all working at the same time, and I can update a document and someone else can look at it or add something if needed. They changed the calendar section a little, and I am not sure if I just haven't figured it out yet, or if it is just not as good as it used to be, but I will keep trying to work with it.
My pledge for this next year is to try and design a good homepage for myself. I have been wanting to explore this aspect of web 2.0, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I have also been wanting to work with my photoshop program a little more, and that might give me a chance to play around with it and help make my page better.

For this one, I have a page on My Space already. I made one when we decided to make a young adult My Space page, and I wanted to know what it was all about.
Here is my profile, if anyone wants to be friends. (Yes, It's Kelahfawn again. :) )I have looked at Facebook, etc. but I tend to like My Space because you can do a little more with decorating your page. I also think that Facebook is geared a little more towards serious applications, (Keeping in touch with relatives, networking for work...) and My Space is a little less serious, more for keeping in touch with friends that you don't have to stay so formal with. I like the bumper sticker app., and one of my friends always sends me these question type bulletins that are kindof fun. Having a selection of your favorite music on a player is nice too. I can see why the teenagers like this site!

I signed up to follow my Alma Mater (MSU) , Edinburgh libraries just for fun, The Unquiet Library, and American Libraries. It seems to me, most of these link thru from Twitter to interesting things on their blogs, kind of like one sentence advertising. I do find the "teaser" sentences intriguing half of the time, and want to go and find out more at their blogs, but mostly they are not posts that are a separate entity, which is part of what I thought twitter was about... Although it probably is effective, and if the one sentence does not appeal to you, you don't have to follow the link. We could use this same strategy at our library, I am sure, such as promoting our spring book sale that is coming up here soon or in listing Young Adult titles that sound interesting. (Maybe one a day, say for no-screen week... Hmmm.)

Instant Messaging, Meebo, and Me

Well, for this assignment, I "Meebo-ed" with Lauren today. It was entertaining. I learned one of her sheep had triplets! :) I found out I am still a somewhat slow typer, and that I would probably enjoy SKYPE more because it is, I'm assuming, less work, :) and if you have the right equipment, you can see, hear, and talk to the person you are calling. I am planning on installing SKYPE on my computer at home and trying it out at a later date. I also installed a Meebo gadget on my blog, although I am not sure how much use it will actually get! :P The other thing that I did for this lesson was I went to OPAL and downloaded a session on gaming to my MP3. We are practicing downloading things to our MP3 players around here since we just got on "Montana Library to Go". This is the site where you can download borrowed audio books to your computer/MP3 for free thru your local friendly public library. I have listened to part of the session on gaming, and it was good. They said that the games they used at their libraries gaming sessions were "Mario Cart Double Dash", "Battlefield 1942" (for teens), and my personal favorite, "Dance Dance Revolution", which is the one that I own and bring for the kids about every other time we have a gaming event. We try and have children's and YA gaming events about once a month with our Wii, but they are going relatively slow at the present moment. and that's it, I guess for this post!

We use E-Mail at our library pretty frequently. I am on the Wired-MT-L list serve, which can be nice sometimes, and sometimes not, since there are a lot of e-mails posted that don't directly apply to me that I have to look at and go through. However there are those others that do apply to me (Montana library 2.0 Challenge) or that I find funny-(Top 10 Utterly Pointless USB Devices) that make it worthwhile. I think using Web 2.0 communications tools to provide online reference is a good idea. I text message one of my friends every once in a while, but not a whole lot. She has a Blackberry with a full keyboard, and I just have my piddly cell phone. :P Plus I have to pay extra to text message. Not a lot, but still. I don't use IM just because there is no one that I know that does, really, so I don't have anyone to talk to. But I might if it came up. :)

New 2.0 Challenge!

The 2.0 challenge last year helped me to be more aware of the different technologies out there that we can use to help our patrons and enhance our own lives. I believe that it has made me a little more effective in being able to help patrons with basic computer operations, such as copying and pasting links to other websites, etc. I have been exploring the web a little more than I was, and have started posting a couple of "How-to's" on the "Instructables" website. This past summer, I had the kids color robots for a coloring contest that they had on "Instructables ", and we won a book which we placed in the YA nonfiction section. (I think that the children/YA really had a good time with that.) I have kept altering my avatar just because it is entertaining. :) When I was on vacation last summer, I copied my vacation pictures onto "Flickr" from my friend's digital camera while I was still in Louisiana, which was really convenient. I have really enjoyed exploring the internet with you all, and I look forward to learning more in the days to come!

A quick post. It seems like time goes so fast, these days. Like you are caught in a time warp, or are "Somewhere over the rainbow..." So I did my avatar this time with Mardi Gras beads, Chinese Sandals for Chinese new year, heart T-Shirt for Valentines, and deely-bobbers for St. Patricks. And the next time I turn around, you know it's going to be Easter....

Epic fail purse

This is a project I put on "Instructables", -a great website I suggest you check it out- it was one of those projects where everything just wanted to go wrong. Kindof funny, really, especially since it was my first posting for this website, and of course you want to do the perfect project. This was so off of perfect, I had to list it anyway. It didn't turn out as funny as I really wanted it to be, though. Oh well,maybe the next time I have a disaster project it will turn out funnier. :)

This Summer, I went to Louisiana for various reasons, not the least of which was to celebrate my upcoming 40th birthday (mine is next year, but hers was this year) with my best friend from grade school. Before I went, however, I was looking up New Orleans on the internet, and discovered this little strange tidbit I thought that I would share with you. Here is the cemetery gate from Lafayette cemetery #1 in New Orleans, and here are the two cemetery gates in my hometown. I don't know that this is of any particular significance to anyone, it is probably just because they were constructed at approximately the same time in history, but I thought that it was curious that they were so similar in appearance. And there you are. My spooky cemetery post a month early for halloween. Boo. ;)

"Kiki Strike- The Empress's Tomb"

This is the second book in the Kiki Strike series. Deceased Empresses, dangerous fathers, delinquent Girl Scouts, and again, rats await in this sequel. Ananka seems to be headed straight to boarding school while young love is grafitti-ing it's way across the upper level of New York for Betty. Many nefarious characters are out to undermine the Irregulars, and half of them are related in some way to members of the group. This is another good read from Kirsten Miller. I enjoyed the chapter endings again, although not as much as in the first book. But the giant squirrels were great. (Does anyone else sense a rodent theme, here? My guess for the next book is bats.)

Second Life

I wish that I could have went to the librarian dance party at Toby's for Second Life, but I only have dial-up on my computer at home right now, so I wasn't able to go. I can see that if you found a good group of people to "Hang Out" with in second life, it would be fun, but so far my experiences with it haven't been totally positive. Overall, though I have really loved this class. I am sad that it is over, and that I have no excuse to go look at my blog anymore! Maybe one of these days, we will get something going for our library. Until then!

"Kiki Strike" -Book review

This is the story of Ananka Fishbein, and her forays into the "Shadow City" with a mysterious girl named Kiki Strike. Kiki gathers an interesting group of "delinquent" girl scouts to help her explore the hidden city underneath New York City proper. Each one has specific talents that will help Kiki in her quest. One of the things that I like about this book, is that it gives advice/information at the end of each chapter about different subjects, such as - "How to take advantage of being a girl", "Other underground worlds", "How to catch a lie", and so on. This book is counted as a "Young Adult" book, and I thought that it was an interesting read, and that the addendum's on the ends of the chapters were worth reading in and of themselves. Oh, but watch out for the rats.

I had a really good time learning things in this class. My favorite right now is the del.icio.us tagging system, which is probably because I am such a packrat, and this site allows me to save practically everything that "I might want to look at later...". I am glad that I took this class, because now I have a better idea of the online community, and the information opportunities that exist. We are updating our young adult section, and two other librarians and I are going to be scheduled to be there in the after school hours, and on Saturdays. Now I feel a little more prepared to be able to help with computer and search questions than I was before this class.
I really enjoyed this class, and of course if there were other classes offered I would love to take them.

Lesson 9 - Wikis

I looked at the Bull Run Library wiki. I liked their "love your library" campaign. I also looked at the SJCPL subject guides, and thought that was a good idea also. I particularly liked the links to the rest of the community.
For applications in a library, I liked how these libraries became linked to their communities thru their wikis, and were able to show diverse information about varied subjects because a wider author base was allowed to contribute. :)

I really like delicious. What's not to like about being able to see everyone else's favorite sites? I of course got on to the art section, and it was pretty interesting to see what was there. I think it is pretty handy to use instead of/in addition to the "favorites" list. You can put a lot more into your delicious file that you might want to look at or use later, than you can on your "favorites" list. I went to Youtube, and I watched a few videos. I went to the library dominos one, and then I watched a few of them about dominoes, including a Japanese one, and an Ipod one. This is a cute one about a starless night:

I picked the eat your heart out one because it suits my sense of humor. ;) I liked the Youtube site because I could look up news subjects that I had missed, and see things on them. I didn't like the content of some of the posts. I think that it would be fun, sometime to make my own video. Trying to come up with a good library based one would be a challenge.

This was fun to do. I made a searchroll on children's crafts, I also made another little one on fingerplays, with Nancy (Looney Lenny's) help, but I should add a few more to that. hopefully it will prove useful for searching for crafts and fingerplays for story times. While I was looking at other people's searchrolls, I happened upon this other librarian's site, and she had a "Meez", so I wanted to get one too. Lesson six

I went to Podcast Alley, and from there went to Kids & Family, and then to Uvula broadcasting, and listened to part of the podcast of "Queen Zixi of Ix" by Frank L. Baum. I think that this could be useful to kids who liked the Wizzard of Oz series of books, but wanted to listen to them and not read them, or listen to the podcast and read the book at the same time. I had trouble subscribing to this feed, because all I could get it to do was download a link to my desktop, and not to bloglines, and I couldn't get it to download to a seperate device either- (MP-3 player) so I could listen to it later, so I was a little frustrated. I'm not sure if it was just the one that I picked that you can't download, or if it is all of them, or if I am just doing it wrong. :) here is the link, though.

Library Thing

New spot at LibraryThing! I went back and added a lot of my library, but when I realized I would hit the limit they allowed a free account before I entered all my books, I quit. Someday maybe I will get a membership and be able to do them all! (The link to my account is right above the "Random books from my library" link.) One of the interesting things about LibraryThing is that they have lists of famous people's libraries, so you can see what, for example, Thomas Jefferson had in his library. Lesson 5

(Sorry, we have the "Battle of the Books" coming up, so we are trying to get through these fast.) I will try and do more later. Well, we went and did the Diva Pro Wrestling name generator, http://generatorblog.blogspot.com/2007/12/diva-pro-wrestling-name-generator.html Which was good, but I am not totally crazy about the name they gave me, which was "Bubbly Mama". ;) If I had been a man the name would have been "Master Bomber", Which is not really my favorite either. :) I went to a lot of the others, including a "handle" generator that gave me the name "Forevercrazy" Which was OK, and a trendy name generator, which gave me the name "Kelah Fawn", which I would never wish on any real human being, but is good for aliases on strange websites. I went to other sites also, including seeing my name in Chinese, and getting my brain scanned. I also went and got my very own homespun analogy, http://www.generatorland.com/generators/homespun_analogy_gl.php Which was "She was as nervous as a three eyed pony in an Afro." So there you are. I also found out that if I wanted to start a garage band a good name would be either "The Rogue Fashion Legacy" or "The Starski Dancefloor Seekers." So, seeing as I am "As wily as a young panther in an onion sack," I think I had better quit here. :)

Bloglines! This was an interesting assignment, although for me it just gave me more great things to look at, so I'm not sure that it is saving me much time. :) My favorite RSS feed is Boing-Boing, http://www.boingboing.net/
and my favorite blog to look at right now is Orangette.http://orangette.blogspot.com/ She had a parsley pesto recipe the other day that looked really tasty. :)
PS- I tried to link Bloglines into my link section, but everytime I tried to use it, it would say "This page is not available..." :( Oh well, I tried. Sorry!
PPS: I figured out what was wrong. the address had two https in it, because when you copy it, it copies the http:// , and in the box it has a http:// already there.

Lesson 1&2

We are doing Blogging as part of an online learning class, and the instructions say that we are supposed to tell which of the "Seven 1/2 Habits of highly successful lifelong learners" is easiest for us and which is hardest, and why. I guess that the 1/2 (Play) is easiest for me, because I enjoy playing, (who doesn't) and it's Fun. :) The hardest for me, I think , is #1, beginning with the end in mind, just because I tend to get distracted by other things I can do and learn, and if I get stuck on something, and don't know exactly how to complete it, I want to put the first thing aside, and go on to something else. Although I am getting better at this, and trying to finish things that I start.
